If you’re an existing customer then you will know that Sky love to hike up their prices. The best way to decrease your bill is of course to haggle with them. But if you’re anything like me the thought of spending an hour being passed from phone queue to phone queue fills you with dread. So I’m going to show you exactly how to haggle with Sky the easy way.

Why haggle with Sky?
If you’re out of contract with Sky then the chances are you will be paying more than you have to. Our contract was due to end at the end of this month so in preparation I contacted them. Within around 15 minutes I had saved almost £200 over the next year. And the best thing? I hadn’t even picked up the phone to them.
I’ve also heard of others saving up to and around £500 over the course of the year. So if you want a really good reason to haggle with Sky there it is!
How to haggle with Sky without picking up the phone
The first thing you will need to do is to log in to your online Sky account. Then head to the ‘cancel your subscription’ section, carry on through to cancel your account. Then you will be offered the chance to call or message. By choosing ‘message us’ you will open up a chat window and go straight through to cancellations.
Once through to cancellations the team member asked my reason for leaving to which I responded ‘the price is too high’. He offered to try and find me a better deal. He came back with an immediate reduction of £15 per month for our broadband and tv package! Considering that’s £180 over the year and I was very happy to accept it.
I will also note here that I agreed to take out a new 18 month contract for this new price to be put in place. But that was fine with me.
How to get a bigger discount
Now here is the thing, I could have pushed to get a bigger discount. I have also heard of people going through with the cancellation to be offered a ‘come back’ offer. But I didn’t do either of those things. I’m a busy working mum of two and I just didn’t have the time spare to haggle any more. My family and I also get good use out of and enjoy the package we have with Sky. So actually cancelling was never my true intention.
Cheaper alternatives to Sky tv
For us Sky tv is a luxury that we’re happy to pay for. We don’t go to the cinema all that often and we don’t tend to buy DVD’s or Blu Rays. The children love the extra kids channels they get. We love Sky Atlantic and the huge selection of movies we can watch on demand. Plus the fact we can record programs to watch at a later date comes in very handy.
However, Sky isn’t the cheapest option out there and there are some fantastic alternatives to save money on your tv bill.
- NowTV offers similar channels to Sky with no contract. You can pick and choose your packages with NowTV on a monthly basis.
- Netflix have a wide range of films and Netflix original content to watch on demand. They also offer a 30 day free trial.
- Amazon Prime Video offer some great original content along with hundreds of movies on demand. Prime video also offer a free trial with the addition of free postage on Amazon products.
