Mystery shopping is a great way to make some extra money and there are often lots of opportunities to get involved all over the UK. Here is all you need to know about mystery shopping in the UK.
Mystery shopping in the UK all you need to know
Mystery shopping is a great side hustle to have. It’s not going to make you a millionaire anytime soon but it will pay you to do things you’ll most likely be doing anyway. Mystery shopping is very flexible so you could also combine it with other side hustles such as matched betting, completing surveys or reselling on eBay.
UK Mystery Shopping Companies
There are so many varied assignments and companies that there is something for everyone. From in store and online grocery shops, to eating out in restaurants and takeaways. Here are a few of my favourite companies.
Marketforce
Marketforce is the perfect company if you have never done any mystery shopping before. The assignments are very easy to complete and they make everything so easy to understand. I completed my first mystery shops with Marketforce and I still use them regularly to this day.
Red Wigwam
Red Wigwam often have regular supermarket assignments, in store demonstrator jobs and merchandising work available. They pay well and often have a good variety of tasks available.
Grassroots
Grassroots have a good selection of assignments available and often well paid. There are jobs currently available in my area that work out at £20 per hour, so well worth registering.
Mystery Dining
Mystery Dining cover hotel and restaurant assignments. If you regularly eat out or fancy a free hotel stay then this is you ideal company.

- Clic and Walk
- Roamler
Registering with companies
When you register with a company take your time. They often ask ‘why would you like to become a mystery shopper?’ They are usually looking for good grammar and that you can communicate efficiently. To save time you might like to copy and paste this information for different companies.
Completing Assignments
Again, with your first few assignments your going to want to take your time. There is quite a lot to remember (and you may be nervous) so give yourself a little extra time to prepare before you head out. Ensure you have read the assignment notes and you are aware of any photos/videos/important questions etc.
Check before you book
Before you book an assignment do a little research and check that it works for you. Make sure the reimbursement will cover expenses as some require you to spend more than you’ll earn. This is fine if you were already going to purchase the item but more often than not this just doesn’t work out.
Covering other expenses
If travel expenses haven’t been disclosed don’t be afraid to email and ask for them. The worst they can say is no and often if they struggle to fill a job they will be happy to negotiate.
The first rule of mystery shopping
The first rule of mystery shopping is, you do not talk about mystery shopping (Hehe, I just love that reference). Seriously though if you’re on a mystery shop then most of the time you will need to be incognito. It’s okay to let friends and family know what you’re up to but don’t mention anything while your completing your task.
