Us millennials don’t often have the best reputation but we aren’t always what we’re made out to be. Generation-X would have us believe that we’re particularly work shy and self entitled but that is not the case. A recent study run by Ferratum on how millennials differ from the Generation-X when it comes to their careers, paints a very different picture.
How do millennials really feel about work
The study revealed that millennials are actually twice as likely to have a second job compared to Generation-X. It also turns out that we’re more ambitious with 64% of millennials wanting to climb the career ladder and be the best at what they do. In compassion generation-X are more likely to be happy with things the way they are.
But being so career focussed comes at a price and 34% of millennials surveyed felt that they have a poor work/life balance and almost 50% feel as though they are over worked and underpaid. This is most probably the reason why 3 in 5 millennials like myself want to start their own business.
Why millennials like myself want to run a business
Out of the millennials surveyed 62% said they are working towards setting up their own business in the near future. But for Generation-X the biggest barrier they faced to set up their own business was the fear of failure and they just weren’t willing to take that risk.
I know that for myself personally, becoming my own boss became really important to me after having my children. The thought of going back to work for someone else to swap my time for money made me feel sick. I didn’t want to put the kids in childcare and let someone else take care of them. So I made the decision there and then that I would make things work by myself by making money from home.
Of course everyone worries about failure but for me I saw it as more of a work in progress. Everything that failed pushed me to try something different until I found what really worked for me. I still see my career and business as a work in progress and I don’t think would ever change.
I love how this study has shown that us millennials are actually incredibly hard working and career driven! I would love to hear your thoughts on this study.
