This post is a little irregular to the usual things I write about but I got to thinking about what I would do if I went to my prom again. So let me explain a little about how this post came about. Back in 2004 my school held its first ever school prom! We were all so excited to be having an actual prom at our school. But with my parents not fully convinced that this would be an actual full on prom they were hesitant to buy me even a new dress to wear. Anyone who has ever been to a prom themselves would understand that you really need to find a prom dresses that suit you.
Anyhow I tried to convince them that this was going to be an actual prom dress, suits and limos kind of affair! But my parents didn’t have much money at the time so they really struggled to pay for any of it. My mum took me to a dress rental place and she bought me a tiara but that was as far as the money would stretch. I had to get the rest myself which was fair enough considering how much we were struggling at the time.
The day of the prom
The day of the prom came around and I didn’t feel great about myself though. All of my friends had their hair professionally done, dresses that looked amazing and they all chipped in so I didn’t have to pay my share of the limo. I felt a bit deflated if I’m honest. Don’t get me wrong I was so, so grateful that my mum had spent her last few quid on me and I know that if she could she would have spent a whole lot more! But it was one of them moments that I was probably never going to have again to dress up like a princess and feel special for the evening.
So if I could go back now and do it all again I totally would! Obviously the situation is completely different now, I now have my own family and money for myself and my mum is a whole lot better.
What I would do if I went to my prom again
If I could do it all again then I would and I would probably start by getting a dress that fit properly and booking in to have my hair professionally done. Shoes would be next on the list with the perfect heel to suit the dress. I quite enjoy doing my own makeup so I wouldn’t change that. And I would make sure I had enough left in the budget for some nice transport to the venue.
As I said I was entirely grateful for what my mum provided me with back then and I know she felt like she had let me down. The prom was a very last-minute thing the school sprung on us and in to be entirely honest if we had more time to budget it would have been much better.
